The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

As I write this, we have three shopping days (counting today) left before Christmas Day. Whether you celebrate Christmas, New Year’s Day, or another holiday, this time of year is typically the time when most people take a step back and reflect. It’s been called “the most wonderful time of the year,” but I’d like to think it’s for a different reason than what you might think. If we can use this time of year to make it a habit to slow down, reflect, and become more mindful in both our personal and professional lives, I’m pretty sure we would all see immeasurable gains in the coming year.

Mindfulness and meditation are hot topics these days, especially with smart phone addiction touching nearly every level of society and community around the globe. We’re always connected and always available, no matter the time of day or day of the week. For business owners, career-oriented professionals and parents, it can seem like a blessing. You’ll never miss a new opportunity or school notification. However, there’s a downside. Our brains never seem to rest. Rest is critical for restoration and the ability to produce new ideas, allowing us to return to our careers and our lives fresh and ready to tackle what’s before us.

There is hope. Mindfulness is not some foreign concept only applicable to the most enlightened individuals in society. It’s accessible to each of us, every day.  I believe it can help us realize how far we’ve come and set a path to achieve what we still hope to accomplish. defines mindfulness as “…the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” There are two components to that definition that resonate with me today: being fully present and not overly reactive.

This past year, AssistPro™ has achieved the big, scary goals we set for ourselves. We’ve also seen some scary times as we’ve dealt with the ups and downs of managing a growing business. This is where the mindfulness definition really hits home for me. As we head full speed into the holiday week and the official end of the 2017 calendar year, it’s time to be fully present and celebrate the success of our hard work while also acknowledging the huge role our clients and our Managing Assistants have played in helping us get there. It’s important that we guard ourselves to avoid being overwhelmed with the craziness that comes with the kind of growth and success we’re experiencing.

As we all wrap up our last To-Do’s and head for a holiday break, it’s my wish that you, your team and your family, would find time to be present. Celebrate your success and those around you who have supported you in your journey. Resist the urge to let the stress of your work and personal life overwhelm. Take a moment and make it a habit to reflect on your success and give yourself a chance to breathe before we jump feet first into 2018 and all the goals we have yet to achieve.

Thank you to everyone at AssistPro™, our clients, our families and friends. As I take a moment to reflect, nothing that we have accomplished or will set our sights on in the future is possible without you.
